On July 27, 2021, Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan (17 sites) were added to World Cultural Heritage List. Eight of those sites are located in Aomori Prefecture. If you want to know about Jomon, read here.
This tour includes two of those world heritage sites, Kamegaoka Burial Site and Tagoyano Site.
Tsugaru City, located in the western part of the northern tip of Tsugaru Peninsula, has been known as a place where 3,000 year old Jomon archaeological sites were found. In this tour, you can visit Jomon archaeological sites and also meet with local people. In addition to visiting Jomon sites, we will visit the largest shrine in the area, Takayama Inari Shrine that has thousands red-colored Torii gates lined up on the hillside.

Meet at JR Aomori Station. The tour starts using a van.
10:00 – 10:20
JR Kizukuri Station building designed in the shape of a snow goggle eyed clay figurine discovered in Kamegaoka nearby.
10:30 – 11:10
Tsugaru City Kizukuri Kamegaoka Archaeological Museum KARCO where there is a reconstructed Jomon pit dwelling, and artifacts unearthed in Kamegaoka area are displayed.
11:30 – 11:50
Kamegaoka site where a snow goggle eyed clay figurine was discovered. Take photos in front of the statue of the figurine.
12:00 – 12:40
Tagoyano Shell Midden where a pit grave and bones were discovered. Also visit a farmer who owns melon fields nearby for tasting melons and water melons on the site.
13:00 – 13:50
Lunch at Takayama Inari Shrine’s restaurant.
13:50 – 15:00
Guided by a shrine priest, explore the shrine’s precinct where there are thousands red-colored Torii gates lined up on the hillside.
