On July 27, 2021, Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan (17 sites) were added to World Cultural Heritage List. Eight of those sites are located in Aomori Prefecture. If you want to know about Jomon, read here.
This tour includes one of those world heritage sites, Futatsumori Site in Shichinohe Town.
Shichinohe Town is located in the west of Lake Ogawara on the Pacific coast. Futatsumori Site, located on the west shore of Lake Ogawara, has been known as a settlement with large shell middens. In this tour, you can visit Jomon archaeological site and Lake Ogawara. Lunch will be at a relocated old farm house restaurant to enjoy local farmer’s food. Shichinohe Town and the surrounding area were known as horse breeding area.

Meet at JR Shichinohe-Towada Station. The tour starts using a van.
9:20 – 10:30
Tohoku Town History & Folklore Museum to learn the environment of Futatsumori Site and Lake Ogawara. Also this museum exhibits a Jomon woman’s skelton.

10:45 – 11:00
Visit Lake Ogawara, the largest lake in Aomori Prefecture and also the key element in the development of Futatsumori Site. Enjoy the view by walking on the shore.

Michino-eki Road Station Lake Ogawara.
11:35 – 13:00
Lunch at Farmer’s Cafe Manaka. The building is a relocated traditional farm house with thatched roof.

Futatsumori Shell Midden Museum.


14:15 – 15:45
Walk through Futatsumori Site where two shell middens, the largest in Tohoku region, were built.
